Character History

Vitale Faliero Dodoni Minor was born and raised in Venice during the reign of the 31st doge, Domenico Selvo. Seeing as he had just become 13 when his father rose to power, Vitale spent his adolescent years primarily alongside his mother and older brother Ordelafo. More often than not, he was ridiculed and vexed by the latter — much to the dismay of their mother; moreover, he received private lessons and therefore had no substantial relationships with people who weren't close family members. Nevertheless, he had access to a prodigious library, loaded with reams of classical, Roman works concerning philosophy, art, politics and religion, allowing him to procure a substantial amount of knowledge and expertise in these fields.

At the age of 18, Vitale moved away from the Palazzo Ducale to start a career as a painter and architect. In his spare time, he published extensive works critiquing political figures and decisions from all around Europe, but mainly from the Italian peninsula. He quickly gained popularity in Venice and other prestigious cities in the vicinity, whereunder Milano. Ordelafo, his older brother and rightful heir to the dogedom of Venice, however, was not politically interested or involved in the slightest, much to the frustration of Vitale. When his father died in 1095, Venice endured six years of economic and political decline due to the ineptitude of the indifferent heir. Ordelafo disappeared in the autumn of 1100. It is believed he was abducted due to the popularity of his brother in the political scene. However, these are only rumors and have not yet been proven. Following the disappearance of his brother, Vitale assumed the position of doge due to overwhelmingly popular demand.
